Fixing toes and legs in newly hatched chicks

Sometimes chicks hatch with bent or curled toes. In some cases these will self-correct within a day if the chick is on good substrate, but often they require assistance. In this case, the toes should be gently straightened into the correct position, and taped in that position with either folded-over tape or taped onto thin cardboard, both cut to shape to allow the bird walking ability. The problem typically corrects within 48 hours of taping.
